..At the height of Flato's career, he was more famous than Tiffany & Co. or Harry Winston. Branching into motion pictures at the pinnacle of Hollywood's Golden Era, Flato designed jewelry for a total of six films, including Holiday (1938) with Katherine Hepburn and the disastrous flop, Two Faced Woman (1941), the last film Greta Garbo ever made.

Specifically As the story goes...These Cufflink designs were made famous by French couturiere ELSA SCHIAPARELLI when she attended the 1941 Paul Flato Jewelry Show Opening in Los Angeles. The cufflink motif was made famous in America circa 1941 by bandleaded EDDIE DUCHIN.

...A Tribute To PAUL FLATO...Jeweler To The Stars...

Paul Flato, was an innovative American jeweler whose diamonds were worn by Hollywood stars like Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, Katherine Hepburn and Merle Oberon. In the 1930's, he counted both socialites and movie stars as clients and his creations were seen in a number of films. Flato jewels adorned Merle Oberon in ''That Uncertain Feeling,'' Rita Hayworth in ''Blood and Sand'' and Greta Garbo in ''Two-Faced Woman.'' Mr. Flato began his career as a watch salesman in New York in the early 1920's and soon opened his own jewelry business on East 57th Street in Manhattan. Within a short time he was one of the best known jewelers in New York. ''He was the first of the major American jewelers to do highly imaginative work on a par with European jewelers,'' said Penny Proddow, a jewelry historian and co-author with Marion Fasel of several books including ''A Century of Spectacular Jewelry'' (1996). ''He would take his ideas to his four designers -- they were his hands -- and they would go on from there to his workshop.'' About 2,000 drawings, from his peak years in the late 30's and early 40's, sold at a Christie's auction in 1994 for almost $200,000. Inspiration came from everything from a fallen leaf to museum paintings and furniture. A compact for Elizabeth Arden took shape in his mind after he saw a rush-bottomed chair in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He fashioned platinum and diamond jewelry in flowers, ribbons and scrolls. An apple blossom necklace for Lily Pons, the opera singer, wrapped around the neck and opened in the front with diamond blossoms cascading on either side. A rose became a rambler that twined around the wrist on a baguette-cut diamond stem sprouting rose-cut diamond buds. In addition to creating ''important'' pieces, Mr. Flato was an early proponent of whimsical jewels. Among them were a diamond ''corset'' bracelet, with garters in rubies and diamonds, based on Mae West's undergarment; a bracelet, aptly named the ''gold digger,'' featuring a gold pickax, and black enamel sign language initial clips for Katharine Hepburn, among the many pieces he did for the 1938 film ''Holiday.'' A compact for Gloria Vanderbilt was studded with gold and enamel angels, including an angel on a chamber pot. A pair of little brooches of gold feet with ruby toenails was originally made for Irene Castle, a play both on her maiden name, Foote, and her dancing career.
